On our penultimate (SAT word, ya'll!) day in Taiwan, we spent the day in Yilan with my other uncle. We started out the day with Taiwanese donuts. Very interesting texture, but they cannot compete with our favorite Nelson's Donuts in little Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Our first stop was to visit one of my uncle's projects. He is an interior designer. He builds and designs the interior of condos from scratch. It is a very cool and creative job. His style is minimal, clean, and modern--with all the most up to date fixtures and appliances. While he made sure everything was in check, Aaron and I took selfies in the mirror.
The next photos contain a series of pictures of food items that we ate that morning. My favorite was the green onion pancake, of which I think we stopped at two different places to try.
Our additional morning activities included visiting a park to watch Aaron fly my uncle's quadcopter (it's hard to see in this picture), and touring the Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts. It was a nice place to learn tid bits about Taiwan history, and we had a great time there.
Our afternoon destination was to Qing Shui Dire, an area with thermal hot springs where you can soak your feet and also cook food to eat (not in the same hot spring pool, of course). First we purchased eggs, bamboo shoots, and corn. Then we washed everything and set them in baskets to cook in the natural hot springs. It was a fun experience, just SUPER hot and humid. Next time, we are going to bring our own food, because the produce they had available was not very fresh.
On our way back to the city, we stopped at another hot springs to soak our feet, and also visited several bakeries to pick up a variety of cakes and goodies. Can you detect a pattern? We ate a lot of different food that day!
That evening, we visited the Keelung Night Market. Night markets are a staple in Taiwan, although they are becoming more and more touristy. Every night market is a little different, but they all sell street food (food sold on the street in carts) and some have shops that sell all sorts of knick nacks.
In the end, after all the things we tried, I still love pot stickers and/or dumplings the best. I could eat those every day!
We had a wonderful day exploring Yilan and the surrounding areas with my uncle. One more Taiwan day to chronicle before I wrap up the Taiwan 2015 series!
